From Residency to Gene Simmons band!

AP: Phil, what has been your approach to music?

PS: Always play from the heart and don’t overthink it.  I’ve been at it so long, that much of it is intuitive, automatic.

AP: Who has been most influencial to you?

PS: As far as influences, no one comes close to The Beatles and KISS.  Of course I have others (Van Halen, Sabbath, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Michael Schenker) but the effect that The Beatles and KISS had on me is monumental.

AP: Thee Rock N Roll Residency. . . What can you tell us about this band?

PS: Thee Rock N Roll Residency was started by Jeremy Asbrock and myself in April of 2014. Jeremy had the idea of a month-long residency in which we get all our friends and play the great rock and roll that we love.  That month turned into 3 years and we’re still going. In addition to our weekly show in Nashville, TN, we also tour regionally and appear on cruises, such as Monsters of Rock.

AP: Often, during your shows, many guests join you. Personally I saw the Residency play with Beasto Blanco and Kix members during last Monsters of Rock Cruise. Is it usual for you?

PS: Yes it is. That started at our Nashville shows.  We have so many talented friends and the talent pool is so big here that it made sense to include them.  Plus, Nashville is growing at an alarming rate, with more people moving here by the day.  Lizzy and Joe from Halestorm have become regulars, Peter Baltes from Accept was one of our first major guests (Accept actually played once!), Roger Glover and Don Airey from Deep Purple have sat in, as have Robin Zander (Cheap Trick), Rachel Bolan (Skid Row), and so many others I can’t even list them all.  Chuck Garric even got Alice Cooper to come!!

AP: With your partner Jeremy Asbrock, you play guitar in the John Corabi Band. How much does it sounds to play with a great artist as Crabby?

PS: Playing with John is always fun. He kicks so much ass and can still sing his butt off.  It’s especially fun to play the Crüe songs that I grew up hearing.

AP: Now you are on tour with another great musician: Gene Simmons from KISS! What experience is it for you and how was this collaboration born? (We are very curious).

PS: The Gene shows are absolutely incredible.  Every show is so special.  That came about through Ryan Cook (also in Thee Rock N Roll Residency and Big Rock Show).  Ryan has known Gene for several years, as well as Doc McGhee (KISS’ manager).  His band, Big Rock Show (also feat. Jeremy Asbrock) has played on every single KISS Kruise.  On the last KISS Kruise, Gene told Ryan about a few solo shows for 2017 and asked him to put together a band. Those few shows have turned into many more (even shows in Japan and South America), so here we are.

AP: The Residency, John Corabi, Gene Simmons. . . You are very busy. Can you tell us your future plans?

PS: Just keep doing what I’m doing.  Stay healthy, clear-headed and focused.  I also own a t-shirt company called Mutt Merch and have another business idea that I want to take further.  The music is great and will always be in my life, but I need other avenues to keep it exciting.

AP: Is there something new about Nashville music scene? I know that many artists live over there in Tennessee. This can help many young artists.

PS: The Nashville music scene is exploding!  It has had the name “Music City” for over 100 years, but now it’s so different.  Artists and musicians from every genre are coming here.  The scene is very much alive.

AP: As guitarist, what is your personal arsenal when you play on stage?

PS: I am endorsed by Vintage Guitars and Orange Amplifiers.  I absolutely love both companies and their products. They both have been very supportive.

AP: Thank You Phil for this interview. Will we have the opportunity to see the Residency here in Italy?

PS: I certainly hope so!  If not Thee Residency, perhaps a Gene show.  I’d love to play for the Italian fans.  Ciao!

E’ un onore poter presentare ai lettori di Rock by Wild un’intervista con Philip Shouse. Dai Residency alla Gene Simmons band!

AP: Phil, qual è il tuo approccio alla musica?

PS: Suono sempre con il cuore e non penso troppo. Suono da così tanto tempo, che ormai è quasi tutto intuitivo, automatico.

AP: Chi ha su di te la maggior influenza?

PS: Per quanto riguarda le influenze, nessuno più di The Beatles e dei KISS. E’ chiaro che ce ne sono altri (Van Halen, Sabbath, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Michael Schenker), ma l’effetto che The Beatles e KISS hanno su di me è monumentale.

AP: Thee Rock N Roll Residency. . . Cosa ci puoi dire di questa band?

PS: Thee Rock N Roll Residency sono stati fondati da me e Jeremy Asbrock nell’aprile del 2014. Jeremy aveva avuto l’idea di un progetto che sarebbe dovuto durare un mese, nel quale avremmo chiamato tutti i nostri amici per suonare rock and roll, come ci piace. Quel mese si è poi trasformato in 3 anni e stiamo ancora andando avanti. A questo si aggiungono il nostro show settimanale a Nashville, TN, i tour regionali e la partecipazione ad alcune crociere, come ad esempio il Monsters of Rock.

AP: Spesso, durante i vostri show, vi raggiungono degli ospiti. Personalmente ho visto i Residency suonare con Beasto Blanco ed i membri dei Kix in occasione dell’ultimo Monsters of Rock Cruise. E’ una cosa frequente per voi?

PS: Si, lo è. E’ iniziato tutto nei nostri show a Nashville. Abbiamo così tanti amici di talento e la piscina del talento è così grande che ha senso contattarli. In più, Nashville sta crescendo ad una velocità allarmante, con sempre più persone che si trasferiscono qui giorno dopo giorno. Ormai ospitiamo regolarmente Lizzy e Joe degli Halestorm, Peter Baltes degli Accept è uno dei nostri primi grandi ospiti (Accept in realtà hanno suonato una volta!), ospitiamo Roger Glover e Don Airey dei Deep Purple, così come Robin Zander (Cheap Trick), Rachel Bolan (Skid Row), e così tanti altri che non riesco nemmeno a nominarli tutti.  Chuck Garric è riuscito a far venire anche Alice Cooper!!

AP: Con il tuo compagno Jeremy Asbrock, suoni la chitarra anche nella band di John Corabi. Quando ti piace suonare con un grande artista come John?

PS: Suonare con John è sempre divertente. E’ così forte e può ancora cantare spaccando. In particolar modo mi diverto molto a suonare i pezzi dei Crüe, con cui sono cresciuto.

AP: Ora sei in tour con un altro grande musicista: Gene Simmons dei KISS! Che tipo di esperienza stai vivendo e come è nata questa collaborazione? (Siamo molto curiosi).

PS: Gli show di Gene sono assolutamente incredibili. Ogni performance è speciale. Abbiamo preso contatti attraverso Ryan Cook (che suona anche nei Thee Rock N Roll Residency e nei Big Rock Show).  Ryan conosceva Gene da diversi anni, così come Doc McGhee (manager dei KISS). La sua band, i Big Rock Show (in cui suona anche Jeremy Asbrock), hanno suonato ad ogni KISS Kruise. Durante l’ultima KISS Kruise, Gene ha chiesto a Ryan di supportarlo in qualche data come solista per il 2007 e gli ha chiesto di mettere insieme una band. Questi pochi show sono poi diventati molti, addirittura siamo andati in Giappone e Sud America, ed eccoci qui.

AP: The Residency, John Corabi, Gene Simmons. . . Sei davvero molto impegnato. Quali sono i tuoi piani per il futuro?

PS: Semplicemente andare avanti come sto facendo. Stare in salute, avere la testa libera da pensieri ed essere concentrato. Ho anche un’agenzia che crea t-shirt, che si chiama Mutt Merch, ed ho un’altra ide adi business che voglio portare avanti. La musica è stupenda e sarà sempre la mia vita, ma ho bisogno anche di altri stimoli.

AP: Cosa c’è di nuovo nella scena musicale di Nashville? So che ci sono molti artisti che abitano nel Tennessee. Questo può aiutare anche i musicisti più giovani.

PS: La scena di Nashville sta esplodendo! Per 100 anni è stata chiamata “Music City”, ma ora è cambiata così tanto. Stanno venendo artisti e musicisti di ogni genere. Il panorama è davvero molto fertile.

AP: Da chitarrista, che strumentazione usi quando suoni sei on stage?

PS: Sono sponsorizzato dalle chitarre Vintage e per gli amplificatori Orange. Amo queste società e i loro prodotti. Sono state entrambe molto attente alle mie esigenze.

AP: Phil, grazie mille per questa intervista. Avremo il piacere di vedere i Residency in Italia?

PS: Spero proprio di si! E se non saranno i Thee Residency, probabilmente sarà uno show di Gene Simmons. Mi piacerebbe davvero suonare per i fan italiani. Ciao!
