Thundermother: l’intervista a Giorgia Carteri

Abbiamo avuto il piacere di scambiare due parole con Giorgia Carteri, chitarrista ritmica delle Thundermother.
La band, tutta al femminile, sta scalando le vette europee e, forte del successo di “Rock ‘n’ Roll Disaster“, è ora in procinto di dare alla luce il prossimo album, che prenderà il titolo di “Road Fever“, la cui uscita è prevista per il 4 settembre 2015. Non potevamo farci sfuggire l’occasione e abbiamo chiesto a Giorgia quali sono i segreti della band e come ci si sente a vivere la musica in Svezia.

Welcome Giorgia and thanks for accepting our interview. We’re trying to know more about Thundermother and also how you approach the music scene.
First of all, can you tell us how and when your love for music has growen up?

Hello everyone! My first approach to hard rock happened when I was 16, I was hanging at my best friend’s place and she showed me a video of Metallica. It blowed me away, love at first sight! But honestly the first ever hard rock tune I heard was “Hell’s Bell” by AC/DC.

Which are the main influences for the band Thundemother?

Main influences are Classic Rock, Hard Rock and Blues. Bands that inspire us are AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Motörhead, Hellacopters, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Chuck Berry, Airbourne, Danko Jones..

Is there any Swedish artist among them?

Hellacopters

How would you describe the music scene in Sweden nowadays?

Sweden is still one of the biggest exporters of music in the world, so the music scene here it’s very alive!

Can you point out similarities and differences from the Italian one?

I think one of the big difference is that the Swedish government supports Arts and especially Music, providing a large amount of funding for bands, artists, music events, labels… So (unlike italy) here there are many venues (big and small), pubs and open air festivals where to play.

Music is taken seriously here! Just think that you can get a full time job as an advisor to help beginners kids to find members to put up a band, then you promote their band by putting the kids in contact with promoters, printing flyers and helping them to book some show. I think this is a dream job, it’s real and you get a good paycheck too! It’s Fantastic!

As for the similarities with Italy I think there are many valid and talented rock/metal Italian bands! And I’m very proud of that!

Would you tell us how your experience in Sweden has been?

I just followed my dream and my intuition, I left my hometown Verona 5 years ago and I ended up here! These years have been a real adventure and sometimes it was very difficult, I had tough moments as I had to leave my family, friends and my comfort zone, learn 2 new languages, adapt to a new and much different culture, sharing apartments, room or sometimes living on my friends couches, cause the Rocknroll life it’s a bitch sometimes! “It’s a long way to the top if you want to Rock an Roll”  you know 😉 But it was definitely The best choice of my life!!! I would do it over and over again, and now my dream has come true!

How have you met Filippa? And when did you first decide to form a rock band?

My friend Mia (singer in Crucified Barbara) introduced me to Filippa in 2011 in Stockholm, she had just moved there to find members for a band and she was looking for a designer to do the logo of her project called Thundermother. I am a creative graphic designer so I got hired to do the logo and few days later we met at a concert and we ended up drunk at a party talking about music, concerts guitars and guitarist… She wanted me to do an audition as rhythm guitarist, and the funny thing was that on the same day I put my guitars on a swedish advertisement site ‘cause I wanted to get rid of them! That day I gave up with Music for real, and the same day Music knocked at my door haha!

The music audition went well and the logo got approved too!

Between Thundermother you can count on 3 different nationalities and 4 different languages. Have you ever thought about singing/writing songs in your own mother tongue?

haha fun, we haven’t discussed it, perhaps in the future, who knows!

What’s the process in creating a new song for Thundermother?

Filippa is the main songwriter. For this album she created “a demo” with the program Garange Band at home and then she brought it to the band in the rehearsal room, and we all worked it out by trying some ideas, music arrangements and lyrics.

You’re an all female band, (it can be seen as a good thing or a bad one for a band, depending on the preconception of the observer), do you think it helped you anyway?

In one way it helped because it is not common to have an all female Hard Rock band, people get curious so they want to check us out. But of course we also have the suspicious, skeptical and hostile people that think that females can’t play RNR.

It’s a “Man’s world” and unfortunately women don’t get the same respect and consideration as men have in the ‘”music industry” as well as in other professional fields.

But we are here to change the rules and inspire young women to learn to play an instrument with courage and devotion!

You’ve been traveling all over Europe. How would you describe the audience reaction in each country you’ve played in?

Spain audience was the best so far! They are very into Rock, they are wild, loud and fans are so dedicated! England was amazing, cool venues and people, Italy and Ireland a bit quieter but it was great fun especially for me and Clare that are born and raised in those countries!

They say that “music is no longer what it used to be”, (even if actually in each decade it is said about the previous one). Do you think we can talk about an evolution in the rock music or, else, standards have been defined decades ago and they can’t be changed?

Is very hard to come up with an evolution especially in Rock music, we can have some development with modern sound or create upon what it’s been already created!

Is there anyone you’d like to share the stage with in the present or in the future?

Among the great and famous bands we already had the honor to share the stage  AC/DC, Motörhead, Airbourne, Metallica are still missing…hopefully it will happen soon! 🙂

And in a future studio session?

Would be a cool to record a solo performed by Phil Campbell, Slash or Angus and have some vocals from  Joan Jett (Runaways) or Joel O’Keeffe from Airbourne!

How much do you think that social networks, and the web, have helped you promoting your music?

Hell Yes a lot! Social networks are everything!

With a non-existing music industry, how can a band survive? Is there still any chance to make a job out of music?

The music industry today is a tough and difficult one especially the Rock industry. Most bands need to finance themselves with a day job.

So yes there is a chance but only if you get very big like AC/DC, Motörhead..

Among the huge amount of bands who are trying to emerge, you’re definitely an example of success. Which is your secret? Is there any advise you could give to other musicians?

Thank you!! Well we have worked very hard for our success so far. Talent gets you so far but a bit of being in the right place at the right time and the contacts you build are just as helpful.

Our advice to any emerging artists is to NEVER give up. Take the Beatles for example: they were rejected by four labels before getting signed. They could have easily stopped trying after the first or second, but they were determined and kept going on until they made it. Not every band will make it, but if you are determined and have the right attitude and are willing to work hard, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t!

Can you anticipate us anything about the new album, “Road Fever”, which is going to be published on sep. 4th, 2015? Which are the differences from “Rock ‘n’ Roll Disaster”?

“Road fever” is much punchier and heavier than “Rock ‘n’ Roll Disaster“! “Rock ‘n’ Roll Disaster” is heavily influenced by AC/DC but “Road Fever” is a little more towards the Motorhead/Danko Jones feel.

Which are the long terms projects for Thundermother?

Conquer the world!

Personal question: why Ikea is no longer producing fornitures in a dark walnut color, they happen to be just black or white?

Hmm.. can’t answer that but you forget about the porn industry here!! one of the other biggest exports!! 😉

Benvenuta Giorgia e grazie per aver accettato questa intervista. Cercheremo di scoprire qualcosa in più sulle Thundermother e anche sul modo in cui vi rapportate al mondo musicale.
Prima di tutto, puoi dirci come e quando è nato il tuo amore per la musica?

Ciao a tutti! La prima volta che mi sono avvicinata alla musica hard rock avevo 16 anni, ero al locale della mia migliore amica e mi fece vedere un video dei Metallica. Mi ha entusiasmato, fu amore a prima vista! Ma in realtà, le primissime note hard rock che abbia mai sentito sono state quelle di “Hell’s Bell” degli AC/CD.

Quali sono le principali influenze musicali delle Thundemother?

Le principali influenze musicali sono il classic rock, l’hard rock ed il blues. Le band che ci hanno ispirato sono AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Motörhead, Hellacopters, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Chuck Berry, Airbourne, Danko Jones...

Tra questi ce n’è qualcuno svedese?

Come descriveresti la scena musicale svedese?

La Svezia è una delle poche nazioni che ancora esporta musica in tutto il mondo, quindi il panorama musicale qui è vivo!

Potresti indicare dei punti di contatto e le differenze rispetto al panorama italiano?

Penso che una delle differenze maggiori sia che in Svezia il governo supporta l’arte e soprattutto la musica, contribuendo con molti finanziamenti per band, artisti, eventi musicali e case discografiche. Quindi, al contrario di ciò che accade in Italia, ci sono molti club, (piccoli e grandi), pub e festival open air in cui poter suonare.

La musica è presa molto seriamente! Pensa solo al fatto che puoi avere un lavoro a tempo pieno diventando un consulente e aiutando i giovani ragazzi ad iniziare, puoi supportarli nella ricerca di altri musicisti per mettere su una band, promuoverli e metterli in contatto con i promoter, stampare volantini e aiutarli nel booking. Penso che questo sia un lavoro da sogno, qui è reale e si guadagna anche bene. E’ fantastico!

Per quanto riguarda le similitudini con l’Italia, penso che ci siano molte band valide nel campo rock/metal! E ne sono molto fiera.

Ci racconti come è stata la tua esperienza in Svezia?

Ho solo seguito il mio sogno e la mia intuizione, ho lasciato Verona, la mia città natale, 5 anni fa e sono finita qui. Questi anni sono stati un’avventura per me e qualche volta ho affrontato momenti difficili perché ho dovuto lasciare la mia famiglia, i miei amici, le mie abitudini, imparare 2 lingue, abituarmi ad una cultura così tanto diversa, condividere appartamenti, la stanza e qualche volta dormire sui divani dei miei amici, a volte la vita rock ‘n’ roll è dura! Sai com’è? “It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll” 😉 Ma è stata decisamente la scelta migliore che potessi fare per la mia vita!!! Lo rifarei mille e mille volte ancora, e ora il mio sogno è diventato realtà.

Come hai conosciuto Filippa? E quando avete deciso di formare una rock band?

La mia amica Mia (voce delle Crucified Barbara), mi ha presentato Filippa nel 2011 a Stockolma, si era appena trasferita per cercare musicisti con cui formare una band e stava anche cercando un grafico per sviluppare il logo del suo progetto chiamato Thundermother. Io sono un grafico, quindi sono stata assunta per fare il logo e qualche giorno dopo ci siamo incontrate ad un concerto e abbiamo finito per essere ubriache ad una festa e parlare di musica, concerti, chitarre e chitarristi… Lei mi ha chiesto di fare l’audizione come chitarrista ritmica, e la cosa divertente è stata che proprio quel giorno avevo messo le mie chitarre su un sito di annunci svedese, perché volevo darle via! Avevo deciso di chiudere con la musica, e quello stesso giorno la musica ha suonato alla mia porta ahahah!

L’audizione andò bene e anche il logo fu approvato!

Le Thundermother racchiudono 3 diverse nazionalità e 4 lingue. Avete mai pensato di cantare le vostre canzoni nelle rispettive lingue d’origine?

ahahah divertente, non ne abbiamo mai parlato, magari in futuro, chissà!

Qual è il processo che porta alla creazione di una canzone delle Thundermother?

Filippa compone più di tutte. Per questo album ha creato una sorta di “demo” casalingo con Garage Band e poi lo ha portato in sala prove, e poi ci abbiamo lavorato tutte provando idee, arrangiamenti musicali e testi.

Siete una band tutta al femminile, (può essere un vantaggio o uno svantaggio per una band, a seconda dei pregiudizi dell’osservatore), pensi che vi abbia aiutato in qualche modo?

In un certo senso ci ha aiutato perché non sono molte le hard rock band tutte al femminile, la gente è curiosa e vuole vederci. Ma sicuramente ci sono anche dei sospetti, persone scettiche ed ostili che pensano che le donne non possono suonare RNR.

E’ un “Mondo di Uomini” e sfortunatamente le donne non ricevono lo stesso rispetto e la stessa considerazione di cui godono gli uomini nell’industria musicale, così come in altri campi lavorativi.

Ma siamo qui per cambiare le regole ed ispirare giovani donne ad imparare a suonare uno strumento con coraggio e devozione!

Avete viaggiato in tutta Europa. Come descrivereste le reazioni del pubblico nelle diverse nazioni in cui avete suonato?

Il pubblico spagnolo finora è stato il migliore! Sono molto appassionati di rock, sono scatenati, rumorosi e i fan sono molto calorosi. L’Inghilterra è stata stupenda, ottimi palchi e pubblico, l’Italia e l’Irlanda sono state un po’ più silenziose, ma è stato bellissimo, specialmente per me e Clare che siamo nate e cresciute in quelle nazioni.

Si dice che non ci sia più la musica di una volta, (cosa che comunque è stata detta ogni decennio di quelli precedente). Pensi che si possa parlare di evoluzione della musica rock o gli standard definiti tanti decenni fa non possono più essere cambiati?

E’ molto difficile pensare ad un’evoluzione, soprattutto nella musica rock, magari possiamo avere degli sviluppi con sound moderni o creare su quello che è già stato creato!

C’è qualcuno con cui vorreste dividere il palco nel presente o nel future?

Tra le grandi band con cui abbiamo già avuto l’onore di divider il palco, quelle che mancano sono AC/DC, Motörhead, Airbourne, Metallica… speriamo succeda presto! 🙂

E nei futuri lavori in studio?

Sarebbe stupendo poter registrare un assolo di Phil Campbell, Slash o Angus e avere delle linee vocali da Joan Jett (Runaways) o Joel O’Keeffe degli Airbourne!

Quanto pensi che i social network, ed il web in generale, siano stati utili per promuovere la vostra musica?

Cavolo, tantissimo! I social network sono tutto!

In un mercato musicale che non esiste, come può sopravvivere una band? C’è ancora la speranza di far diventare la musica un lavoro?

L’industria musicale oggi è dura e difficile, soprattutto quella del rock. Molte band devono auto finanziarsi con un altro lavoro.

Quindi si, ci sono delle possibilità, ma solo se diventi grande come AC/DC, Motörhead..

Tra l’incredibile quantità di gruppi che cercano di emergere, le Thundermother sono un esempio di successo. Qual è il vostro sergreto? C’è un consiglio che potresti dare agli altri musicisti?

Grazie!! Beh, abbiamo lavorato molto duramente per raggiungere quello che abbiamo. Il talento ti porta lontano, ma essere al posto giusto al momento giusto e costruire buoni contatti è indispensabile.

Il nostro consiglio per tutti gli artisti che tentano di emergere è di non mollare MAI. Prendete i Beatles per esempio: sono stati rifiutati da 4 case discografiche prima di avere un contratto. Avrebbero tranquillamente potuto smettere dopo il primo o il secondo rifiuto, ma erano determinati e sono andati avanti finché non ce l’hanno fatta. Non ce la faranno tutte le band, ma se sei determinato e hai la giusta attitudine e hai voglia di lavorare duro, non c’è motivo perché non dovresti farcela.

Puoi anticiparci qualcosa sul prossimo album “Road Fever”, che sarà pubblicato il 4 settembre 2015? Quali differenze dobbiamo aspettarci rispetto a “Rock ‘n’ Roll Disaster”?

“Road fever” è molto più intenso e duro rispetto a “Rock ‘n’ Roll Disaster“! “Rock ‘n’ Roll Disaster” è fortemente influenzato dagli AC/DC, ma “Road Fever” è un po’ più vicino all’attitudine Motorhead/Danko Jones.

Quali sono invece i progetti di lungo periodo per le Thundermother?

Conquistare il mondo!

Domanda personale: perché Ikea non produce più mobile color noce, ma solo bianchi o neri?

Hmm… non saprei rispondere, ma non dimenticate l’industria del porno svedese! E’ un’altra grande esportazione!! 😉
