Intervista ai Throes Of Dawn
Rock by Wild dà il benvenuto ai Throes Of Dawn, band dal suono dark progressive metal proveniente dalla Finlandia. Abbiamo scambiato qualche riflessione con Henri Koivula, voce del gruppo, che ha risposto a tutte le nostre domande.

Rock by Wild welcomes Throes Of Dawn
Your 6th full length has come out on august 20th, how did you put it together and which reaction did you expect from the audience?
This album is the first in the bands history, where we composed the songs together as a band. In the past, our guitar players made the music to the songs at home and then we would just rehearse them with the band. Now, we put a lot of effort in the songwriting and I think it can be heard on the album as well. We didn´t really think what the audience would think about the music. We are doing music mostly for ourselves. We want to create the kind of music that we enjoy listening to. We are well aware that this album is not pleasing all our fans, but we really don´t care. As an artist, you have to be honest to yourself and your art, and do what feels right.
What’s behind the title “Our Voices Shall Remain“, is there any message you wanted to leave?
Well, it´s a name I made for one of the songs, and then thought that it would go quite nicely as the album name as well. The lyrics to the song “Our Voices Shall Remain” is actually written as some kind of tribute to the band and its members. It´s about how we create something abstract like sounds and music that will live on even after we are gone.
Would you tell us who did and what represents the artwork cover?
The artwork was done by Costin Chioreanu. A very talented guy from Romania, who makes very impressive artworks. He painted the covers while listening to the music. I think he really nailed it, I can truly see some themes of the music in that front cover picture. It´s always really interesting to see how music translates into pictures.
Throes Of Dawn has come from a long journey all over the music. Is there anything new and really different from your previous works in “Our Voices Shall Remain“?
I think there is quite a lot new things in the music. Now there are two new members and I think they have added some new vibe and freshness to the sound. This album has quite a lot of instrumental passages, and long guitar leads. The songs are also quite long, compared to the old material. We did not want to limit the songs with their duration, no matter if it´s 5 or 15 minutes as long as it works out. There is also a change in the vocals, as now there are only clean vocals.
Previous album “Great Fleet of Echoes” was released on 2010. Is there any reason why it took you so long to release another album?
Plenty of reasons for that. Like I told earlier, we had some changes in the line-up and it took some time get things going. I also have another band and we made an album with it almost simultaneously. During these six years we have had all kinds of stuff happen in our personal lives… as you get older you have to consider other things besides music. But anyway, I don´t see this six years as too long time. We didn´t rush it, we just wanted to make the best possible album. We burn with a slow flame.
“The Great Fleet of Echoes” was claimed as one of the best metal album in 2010. Do you think “Our Voices Shall Remain” will follow its footsteps?
I don´t know, but I hope the album gets good feedback. It seems that we are getting very good reviews from this album, there some which are quite neutral, but haven´t seen really bad ones yet. I´m sure this album is not for everyone, and it shouldn´t be.
What can you tell us about the Dark Bombastic Evening, how’s been the show? Did you planned anything special for that night?
Yes, DBE7 was a great experience. I was there also last year with my other band and instantly fell in love with that festival. It has a very nice, cozy mood. And most of the performers are underground bands. We played on the day the album was officially released, we had quite short set, but we played mostly new stuff and few older ones. It was a pleasure to meet the cover artist Costin Chioreanu there as well.
Is there any European tour in your plans?
No tours, but we are trying to get some decent shows around Europe, some festivals etc. But we shall see. A small tour might be ok, but we prefer shorter trips.
It seems that Finland gives birth to a lot of metal musicians. Why so many people in your country choose to go metal in your opinion?
We have been thinking about this quite often. One of the main reasons might be that we have so long and depressive winter, when there is nothing much to do. You don´t want to go outside and it´s dark most of the day. So, I think that will give you an extra motivation to do some (not so happy) music. One reason could also be that the metal and overall melancholic music fits our introvert Finnish character very naturally.
Throes Of Dawn has been founded in 1994, how has your music scene changed since then? And how did the band react to those changes?
The change has been dramatic. When we started it was just tape trading and flyers, and shitty copy machine zines. Now everything happens lightning fast and the information and the music is instantly available. We have seen the decline of the record sales, it feels unbelievable that we have sold so many thousand albums, when today´s record sales are so small even with the big bands. I think we have adapted quite well, mostly because we are not in this for the money. We would still make music even if no one would buy any albums.
Who’s been the last to join the line up and what took in the band?
The latest arrival was Juuso Backman, who replaced our former drummer. Juuso has been a real treasure; a very good musician, very good studio technician and a very nice guy. There is always a risk when you get new people in the band that it might not work out. Luckily, we have a very solid line-up now.
Can you make a living out of music?
Not with this band, no way. And I have to say that I´m glad that I don’t have to make a living out of this. Otherwise it would start to affect the music as well. We would have to be more commercial etc. I know people who try to make a living with music, and it´s not easy. Sooner or later you will have to make compromises with your art to get more money.
Which are your plans for the near and far future?
Well, first we have some live shows coming up, and we are preparing for them. At the same time we are already looking for some new material. So, hopefully it will not take another six years to come up with the next album!

Il vostro 6° album è uscito il 20 agosto 2016, come è nato e che reazione aspettavate dal pubblico?
In questo album, per la prima volta nella storia della band, abbiamo composto le canzoni tutti insieme. In passato i nostri chitarristi scrivevano la partitura delle canzoni a casa, e poi le provavamo con la band. Ora ci impegniamo molto nel songwriting e credo che si possa sentire dall’album. Non ci siamo realmente posti il problema di cosa il pubblico potesse pensare delle canzoni. Facciamo musica più che altro per noi stessi. Cerchiamo di creare il tipo di musica che ci piace ascoltare. Siamo consapevoli che quest’album potrebbe non piacere a tutti i nostri fan, ma in realtà la cosa non ci preoccupa. Come artisti, sappiamo che bisogna essere onesti prima di tutto con se stessi e la propria arte, e fare ciò che si ritiene giusto.
Cosa si nasconde dietro il titolo “Our Voices Shall Remain“, volete lasciare qualche messaggio?
Beh, in realtà avevo dato questo titolo ad una delle canzoni e poi ho pensato che potesse essere un bel titolo anche per l’intero album. Il testo della canzone “Our Voices Shall Remain” è scritta un po’ come se fosse un tributo alla band e ai suoi componenti. Parla di come abbiamo creato qualcosa di astratto come i suoi e la musica, che vivrà anche dopo che noi ce ne saremo andati.
Ci dite chi ha prodotto e cosa rappresenta l’immagine di copertina?
L’artwork è stato fatto da Costin Chioreanu. Un ragazzo di grande talento che viene dalla Romania e che crea dei lavori impressionanti. Ha dipinto le immagini di copertina mentre ascoltava la nostra musica. Credo che abbia perfettamente centrato il punto, mi sembra davvero di vedere le tematiche delle canzoni in quelle immagini di copertina. E’ sempre molto interessante vedere come la musica viene trasformata in immagini.
Il viaggio dei Throes Of Dawn nel mondo della musica è stato lungo. C’è qualcosa di nuovo e veramente differente in “Our Voices Shall Remain” rispetto ai vostri precedenti lavori?
Credo che ci siano molte cose nuove nella musica. Ora ci sono due nuovi membri nella band e credo che abbiano aggiunto nuove vibrazioni e freschezza nel suono. Quest’album è formato da molti passaggi strumentali, e lunghi assoli di chitarra. Anche le canzoni sono piuttosto lunghe, se paragonate a quelle precedenti. Non abbiamo voluto limitare la durata dei brani, finché i pezzi funzionano non ci interessa che durino 5 o 15 minuti. C’è stato anche un cambiamento nelle linee vocali, dal momento che ora usiamo solo la voce pulita.
L’album precedente “Great Fleet of Echoes” è stato pubblicato nel 2010. C’è un motivo per cui avete impiegato così tanto per pubblicarne un altro?
Ci sono tante ragioni. Come dicevo prima, ci sono stati dei cambi di formazione ed abbiamo impiegato un po’ di tempo per metterci a regime. Inoltre io ho un’altra band ed anche con questa abbiamo lavorato ad un album quasi contemporaneamente. In questi sei anni poi sono successe le cose più disparate nelle nostre vite personali… quando diventi adulto devi tenere in considerazione anche altre cose oltre la musica. In ogni caso però, non mi sembra che questi sei anni siano stati così lunghi. Non ci siamo messi fretta, volevamo solo creare il miglior album possibile. La nostra fiamma brucia lentamente.
“The Great Fleet of Echoes” è stato dichiarato uno degli album migliori del 2010. Credete che “Our Voices Shall Remain” seguirà lo stesso destino?
Non saprei, ma spero che l’album abbia dei buoni riscontri. Sembra che stiamo avendo delle ottime recensioni, ce ne sono anche di neutrali, ma finora non ne ho ancora viste di pessime. Sono sicuro che quest’album non sia per tutti, e non dovrebbe esserlo.
Cosa potete raccontarci del Dark Bombastic Evening, come è andato lo show? C’era qualcosa di speciale programmato per quella sera?
Si, il DBE7 è stata un’esperienza magnifica. Ero presente anche l’anno scorso con l’altra mia band e mi sono subito innamorato di quel festival. Ha un’atmosfera molto bella ed accogliente. E quasi tutti i gruppi che si esibiscono vengono dall’underground. Abbiamo suonato lo stesso giorno in cui l’album è stato pubblicato, avevamo un set piuttosto corto, ma abbiamo suonato per la maggior parte nuove canzoni e qualche vecchio pezzo. E’ stato un piacere incontrare anche l’artista della copertina Costin Chioreanu che era lì.
Avete già in programma un tour Europeo?
Nessun tour, ma stiamo cercando di fissare qualche buona data in Europa, qualche festival etc. Si vedrà. Un piccolo tour potrebbe accadere, ma preferiamo che siano corti.
Sembra che la Finlandia sia la patria dei musicisti metal. Come mai credete che così tante persone nel vostro paese scelgono di suonare metal?
Ci pensiamo spesso. Una delle ragioni principali potrebbe essere che abbiamo degli inverni molto lunghi e tristi, in cui non c’è molto da fare. Non hai voglia di uscire e per la maggior pare delle ore del giorno è buio. Credo che questo dia una forte motivazione al voler comporre una musica che non esprima una gran felicità. Un’altra ragione potrebbe essere che il metal, e sopratutto la musica malinconica, si sposa perfettamente con il carattere introverso dei finlandesi.
I Throes Of Dawn sono stati fondati nel 1994, come è cambiata la scena musicale da allora? E come ha reagito la band a questi cambiamenti?
I cambiamenti sono stati destabilizzanti. Quando abbiamo iniziato si lavorava con le tracce su tape, i volantini e copie a buon mercato di riviste. Adesso avviene tutto alla velocità della luce, le informazioni e la musica sono disponibili all’istante. Abbiamo vissuto il calo delle vendite discografiche, sembra incredibile che abbiamo venduto così tante migliaia di album, quando le vendite di oggi sono così basse, anche per le grandi band. Credo che siamo riusciti a reagire piuttosto bene, più che altro perché non facciamo musica per denaro. Continueremmo a fare musica, anche se nessuno acquistasse più un album.
Chi è stato l’ultimo ad entrare nella line up e cosa ha portato alla band?
L’ultimo ad arrivare è stato Juuso Backman, che ha sostituito il nostro precedente batterista. Juuso è stato davvero prezioso: è un grande musicista, un tecnico di studio molto professionale ed un bravo ragazzo. Quando entra un nuovo membro in un gruppo, c’è sempre il rischio che le cose possano non funzionare. Fortunatamente ora abbiamo una formazione solida.
Riuscite a vivere di musica?
Non questa band, non c’è possibilità. E devo dire che sono contento che sia così. Altrimenti anche la musica ne sarebbe influenzata. Dovremmo essere più commerciali etc. Conosco diverse persone che stanno cercando di far diventare la musica un lavoro, e non è facile. Prima o poi devi scendere a compromessi con la tua arte per guadagnare soldi.
Quali sono i vostri progetti nel prossimo futuro e più in là?
Beh, prima di tutto dobbiamo pensare ai prossimi live show, per cui ci stiamo preparando. Allo stesso tempo stiamo lavorando a del nuovo materiale. Quindi, speriamo che non ci vorranno altri 6 anni per un nuovo album!
